Stellantis is pleased to announce that Jean-Michel Billig, former Managing Director of Naval Group, will join the company as Chief Technology Officer to develop hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, effective June 27, 2022. In addition, Stellantis also announced that Uwe Hochschurtz, CEO of the Opel brand, will take on the additional role of globally leading the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

"Jean-Michel's broad spectrum of experience in the aircraft, aerospace, automotive, and marine industries will help bring additional ideas to increase Stellantis' ambitions in hydrogen fuel cell sales and the broad spectrum to meet zero-emission requirements," says Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. "With Jean-Michel and Uwe in these complementary roles, we demonstrate our commitment to expand our hydrogen fuel cell technology and achieve the ambitious sustainability goals of our Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan."

Jean-Michel Billig began his career in 1988 at Aerospatiale in the helicopter division before moving to Schlumberger Industries. In 1995 he joined Aerospatiale as Marketing Director for the Americas. In 1998 Billig went to Airbus, where he successively managed the purchasing of avionics equipment and systems engineering and became CTO at Eurocopter. In 2012 he was appointed Renault's EVP of Engineering, Quality, and IS. In 2015 he joined Zodiac Aerospace as CEO and, in 2017, became EVP of the Naval Group's Australian Future Submarine program.

At Stellantis, Jean-Michel Billig will report to Chief Engineering Officer Harald Wester and functionally to Ned Curic, Chief Technology Officer.

Uwe Hochschurtz will assume this new role and his current position as CEO of the Opel brand, which he has held since September 2021. He will lead a dedicated team to strengthen the company's commercial offensive, with an initial focus on the European market.

Late last year, Stellantis began shipping its zero-emissions efficient solution that combines the benefits of hydrogen fuel cells and e-battery technology in a fuel cell electric vehicle. This solution is particularly suited to light commercial vehicle customers who require long-range, fast refueling and zero emissions without compromising payload capacity.
